When we caught wind of Daniel and Leigh’s team of vendors (Ashley Hopkins, Heartwood Hire, Anthony Cribbes, Good Day Club, Truffle Pig Catering & Events to name only a few) we knew their colourful wedding at Mimosa Glen Homestead in Central Victoria was going to be a hit. Plus who doesn’t love a wedding with a Pomeranian wearing a flower necklace?
Tell us about how you met and the proposal?
We met at a pub on a Wednesday night and made eyes at each other across the room. Daniel started a conversation and told me about his Pomeranian and Dachshund and I obviously had to meet them immediately, hence the second date.
We moved to India for two years for Daniel’s job, and took many holidays throughout the country, the most memorable one being on a houseboat tour over Christmas and New Year 2015. Surrounded by rice paddies… our boat pulled in to moor at a beautiful location on New Years Eve.
Daniel, who had been doing a lot of practice and experimentation with his new Nikon D810 camera, asked me whether I would take a photo of him in front of the rice paddies just after sunset so he could try the slow exposure function by way of writing in the air with a sparkler. I began to get quite frustrated with having to pause cocktail hour for such a whimsical task and then it dawned on me what was going on and exactly what he was spelling out. Finally “Marry me?” appeared on the camera display I was sitting behind and he proposed right there.
He had brought my Grandmothers diamond eternity ring all the way from Australia and all the way to rural Kerala in preparation, as well as smuggled some French champagne into the state (which is against the law) which we of course drank that night on the deck of the houseboat to destroy all evidence.
What DIY projects did you do accomplish for the wedding?
We sourced 6 vintage mirrors from op shops and antique stores which we then had a calligrapher write on to be our signage.
What was your theme/inspiration/vibe for your wedding?
Vintage Spring Garden Party – relaxed, organic and elegant with a touch of whimsy.
What traditions did you involve during your big day?
Fairly traditional but relaxed ceremony, first dance, cake cutting.
What advice would you give to other couples leading up to their big day?
- Don’t sweat the small stuff. It will all come together beautifully on the day.
- Have a spreadsheet for everything!
- Surround yourself with positive, supportive people in the days leading up to the big day.
- Make all your final payments two to four weeks prior so its one less thing to think about closer to the day.
What does marriage mean to you?
Marriage should be a lifelong friendship, grounded in trust and respect and radiating fun and openness.
What was your favourite moment on your wedding day?
Standing in front of all our friends and family during the ceremony in such a beautiful location was overwhelmingly special. We had to hold back tears the entire ceremony.
Tell us any funny stories that surrounded your wedding?
Mischa our Pomeranian got her flower necklace stuck in her fur as she was walking me down the aisle and my mum had to come and fix the situation and carry her down.
One of the vintage dining chairs from Good Day Rentals was actually one of Daniel’s parents dining chairs from the 80s/90s!
The bridal party kicked on and may or may not have been dancing on tables to the LeAnn Rimes classic “can’t fight the moonlight” a la Coyote Ugly.
How did you find your venue and was the process difficult for you?
We found Mimosa Glen on WedShed. We love the terrain, granite boulders and rolling hills of the Heathcote region and hope to move to the area in the near future. Due to this, we were looking specifically in the Central Victoria region and WedShed had a few options of which Mimosa Glen seemed to suit us perfectly.
Ceremony song?
Processional – Nick Cave, The Ship Song.
First dance song?
Sleepwalk, Santo & Johnny.
