Being clear on their priorities made the wedding planning process a whole lot easier for Chloe and Trent, who did things entirely their way.

Reading about Chloe and Trent's Melbourne wedding made our hearts swell with pride and joy. All the stuff we wax lyrical about (re-inventing traditions, resisting social media pressure, wearing whatever you want etc.) they took on board and created a day that was uniquely them.

Everything including their ninja vows, choreographed first dance routine and Krispy Kreme doughnuts that were served in lieu of dessert all had some kind of relevance and meaning to Chloe and Trent and who they are as a couple.

Completely heart-warming. Undoubtedly fun. This whole VIC celebration is worth checking out (especially if you're after some incredibly helpful wedding planning insights). Captured by Two of a Kind Photography, check it out below.

How did you and Trent meet? Trent and I met in year 10 in high school. We were in a maths class together, and what began as friendship turned into something more! We started officially dating in year 11, and have been together ever since!

The proposal: The proposal was a surprise for me! We were heading down to Lorne to go camping and decided to make a few fun stops along the way, one of which was a secluded beach in Angelsea (Point Addis). After walking along the big stretch of beach, cuddling and looking at the ocean, Trent asked me to marry him, and I said yes!!

The venue: Originally we thought we wanted our wedding to be at a winery, or a property in the Yarra Valley, but after looking at a few venues we knew it didn’t feel like us. We wanted our wedding to be less traditional, and be enjoyable and relaxed for us and our guests. We then set our sights on looking for more industrial venues closer to where we live to see what was out there, and found the amazing Luna Event Space in Highett! It was beautiful, simple, and the food and drink selections sounded amazing - very important to us.

The vibe: We wanted our wedding to be a ball of fun for us and our guests, and that was certainly achieved! We decided to lean into the things that would bring us joy on the day, rather than sticking to traditions just because that is what has been done before.

All in all, we wanted our day to be stress free, colourful, full of delish food and drink with great music pumping, and for it to feel like a wedding for us, not anyone else.

Traditions (adopted, adapted or ditched):

Adopted:

  • First dance - we choreographed our dance ourselves which was so fun, especially as I use to be a dance teacher! No two step, simple dance for us!
  • Ring exchange.
  • Speeches.

Adapted:

  • I had both my mum and dad walk me down the aisle.
  • Photos before the wedding! We took all our couple photos before the ceremony by having a first look so that we didn’t have a break between the ceremony and the reception. We wanted to enjoy spending as much time with our guests as possible.
  • Wedding vows! Our celebrant, Leah Weds, had us write ninja vows, where we wrote fun vows for the other person to read out for the first time at the alter! We thought this would be a fun addition as it was personable, funny, and memorable! We also did rock paper scissors to decide who went first.
  • Instead of a father daughter dance, we did a parents dance! During one song, I danced with my dad and father-in-law, and Trent danced with his mum and my mum. We wanted all our parents to be involved as they are all such important people in our lives.

Ditched:

  • Wedding party - whilst we still surrounded ourselves with family and friends when getting ready on our wedding day, we decided not to have a wedding party to keep things simple.
  • Wedding cake - we don't usually enjoy eating the cake at weddings we've attended before, but we do love a Krispy Kreme original glazed doughnut, so we had those served up for sweets instead! (And they were easy to eat while on the dance floor too!).

New:

  • I decided to surprise Trent with a lip sync in the middle of our ceremony to the song ‘I’m Gonna Getcha Good’ by Shania Twain! I had a blast, and our guests loved it!

The outfit/s: I found my wedding dress when mindlessly scrolling on ASOS! I wasn’t expecting to find my wedding dress this way, but when I saw it I instantly fell in love - I had to have it! It felt AMAZING to wear on the day! I felt so beautiful! I decided to also have a second outfit which included white linen pants from Bec + Bridge and a gorgeous sequin top from Aje so I could really bust a move for our first dance and boogie the night away!

Trent wore a suit jacket and a relaxed style of pant from Hugo Boss. Trent is all about comfort when it comes to clothes, and wanted his wedding outfit to feel comfortable yet stylish too. He topped it off with his RM Williams belt and boots, and a gorgeous Tisso watch that matched his white and yellow gold wedding band.

Hit (or near) miss: I dropped Trent’s ring when I opened the ring box before our ring exchange! So hot tip: make sure the ring box is the right way around before you open it!

During our first dance we had a lift, which we nailed every time we practiced it, and of course, on the wedding day, we had a hiccup and we didn’t nail it! We tried the lift and it didn’t work straight away, but after a quick second attempt Trent got me in the air, and we did it! (And still managed to stay on beat!).

I'll always remember... The moment Trent turned around and saw me in my wedding dress for the first time! That was so special and was an intimate moment shared between just us (and our wonderful photographer who captured it perfectly of course).

And also, just the feeling of pure joy we had the entire day! There wasn’t one moment we were worried or stressed about something. We just remember being so happy, which is exactly what we wanted.

Standout vendors: Two of a Kind (photographer) - Eric was brilliant! He was always in the right spot to capture beautiful moments across the wedding day. He really documented the day in a way that makes it easy to relive it when looking through the photos! We love the photos so much!

Luna Event Space/Fourside Events (venue/caterer) - Katie and the team were so wonderful to liaise with, and made the day so lovely. The food, the drinks, the space - all fantastic!!!

Leah Weds (celebrant) - Leah was so great as she captured exactly the vibe we wanted from a ceremony - fun, engaging, and entertaining! She suggested so many things to make the ceremony enjoyable for everyone. She also really got to know us to create a ceremony that perfectly conveyed our love story, whilst being fun and a bit cheeky!

Ciana Floral (florist) - Beth is brilliant when it comes to creating gorgeous wedding flowers! I was completely in love with my bouquet and all the floral touches we had on the wedding day.

Bangin Hangins (aerial decor) - As soon as I saw their Instagram page, I knew we were going to have their hangings at our wedding! They made the space feel so full and vibrant!

Soundtrack: Aisle song: "Runway", by The Blue Noted (Piano Rendition). Recessional: "Why I Love You", by Jay-Z, Kanye and Mr Hudson. First dance: "Double Trouble", by Will Ferrell and My Marianne. Parents dance: "Daylight", by Maroon 5. Last dance: "May I Have This Dance", by Francis and the Lights.

Words of wedding wisdom: When we started planning our wedding, we did a brainstorm around these key questions, and wrote down different things we could do to answer/address them on our wedding day:

  1. How might we feel special on our wedding day? (Snazzy outfits, having a first look, cute and personal decorations…)
  2. How might we capture the moments to remember the day? (Great photographer, disposable cameras…)
  3. How might we have the best time throughout the day? (No drama, incorporating things that will make us laugh and smile…)
  4. How might we have a stress free day? (No seating arrangements - cocktail style instead, having ceremony and reception at one venue…)

How we addressed these questions, including the answers in the examples above in our case, guided us as to what was important and what we needed to plan so we could achieve those things.

It stripped the wedding planning back to its core of what was going to make the day special for us, and helped us remove the pressure of ‘having to’ incorporate different elements and traditions because that’s the way it has been done before at other weddings.

The future: We can’t wait to continue building our life together as husband and wife! Plus, we are looking forward to our honeymoon! We are heading to South Korea and Japan.
