Fiona and Peter’s wedding caught our eye sometime ago. It won’t take you long to realise why – two loved-up people that took on some amazing DIY projects with family and friends. With hired help from Studio Events, this couple managed to transform a blank-canvas inner-city venue into one of the coolest party spaces we’ve ever seen.
That space is Perth City Farm, one of our fave WA venues that WedShed has partnered with. The farm boasts an industrial style barn, large courtyard and great flower and vegie gardens for photo opps.
Special mention to Fiona and her bridal party – we’re going nuts over the wedding dress from Clear Couture and the alternating bridesmaid’s frocks by Anu and Shona Joy.
Anyway, check out the awesome photos by Aimee Claire Photography below, and then check out the farm. If you’re interested in chatting to the venue manager about holding your big day there, you can send an enquiry through via Perth City Farm’s venue profile.
Fiona and Peter – tell us about how you met and the proposal?
We met in our first year of Uni. Peter proposed on our 10th anniversary, he surprised me by sending a car to pick me up while he ‘ducked out to pick something up’ before dinner and proposed on the Oak Lawn at the University of Western Australia where we first met.
What DIY projects did you accomplish for the wedding (or at least attempt)?
Heaps, the most impressive being the paper cranes suspended from a ladder we had down the side of our house. Camille, our event planner, dressed the ladder with bunches of greenery before it was suspended by the electrician with a collection of his single bulbs.
We also did all the reception flowers with the help of family and friends, and our florist supplied the perfect mix of colourful and textural florals for us to use. We displayed them in recycled bottles and jars we had collected. A friend potted herbs and plants in jars for the table centrepieces (each table was named for a herb).
Outside I did up a couple of chalk boards with the dessert options and tasting notes for the wines and beers and we had spray painted cane furniture we found on Gumtree / verge collections and my mother made colourful cushions for them. I also spray painted milk crates for the bar and to use as chairs/tables (Camille’s idea).
For the photo booth we made colourful bunting to suspend over big wooden doors and recycled some large picture frames.
Tell us any funny stories that surrounded your wedding?
Having our wedding in a public place we had some interesting guests pass by during the ceremony, including a party boat and a kayaker in his budgee smuglers. Otherwise it all went pretty smoothly, except for one of our friends who ended up with a dance floor injury requiring stitches!
What was your theme/inspiration/vibe for your wedding?
Relaxed colourful boho.
What traditions did you involve during your big day?
Our wedding ceremony was a traditional Anglican wedding, but held on the foreshore instead of in a church. Our families were a big part of the wedding, as part of the wedding party or giving the readings.
The reception was less traditional, with Thai influenced food, served family style at banquet tables, in the lofty shed structure at Perth City Farm. After dinner, guests were surprised by a six-piece band outside under the stars.
What was your favourite moment on your wedding day?
Too hard to pick – relaxing after the ceremony with our closest friends and family and talking way into the early hours as man and wife about everything we’d experienced that day.

What does marriage mean to you?
Formal recognition of a lifelong love and friendship.
What advice would you give to other couples leading up to their big day?
Relax and enjoy the process, learn to delegate to friends or paid helpers and keep in mind that its about the two of you celebrating with your closest friends and family, not all the details.
