“It was pretty much a summer fling that turned into a forever thing”, says Amy who married her (now) husband and best friend Jason (or Jase as he’s affectionately known) at Moby Dicks Whale Beach – one of Sydney’s most popular waterfront wedding venues.
It was a celebration full of laughter, love and happy tears (topped off with plenty of drinks and dancing) which, if you read on, will know that’s exactly what this pair wanted.
Tell us about how you met and the proposal?
We met in high school through mutual friends but only started dating in early 2010. Our romance started up north in a cute little place called Woolgoolga, just north of Coffs Harbour. It was pretty much a summer fling that turned into a forever thing.
Jason proposed down the south coast at his favourite beach, Hyams Beach. He organised a picnic hamper with a local and had it all planned perfectly, however, the rain was not his friend. We found a nice cosy spot under the rocks and set up the picnic and he dropped the knee after I asked him why we were here? I obviously said yes so here we are!
What DIY projects did you do accomplish for the wedding?
The invitations! My best friend Nat created the template, however we had to stick them on rose gold backing and spray paint the backing because finding rose gold cardboard was a failure. It took forever but they turned out perfectly. My mum also did so much for our wedding! She dressed the tables and did the flowers. She is a gem!
What was your theme/inspiration/vibe for your wedding?
Beach but also a little bit of sophistication. I love simplicity. Nothing too over the top!
What traditions did you involve during your big day?
I did the whole, something new something borrowed and something blue.
New – Jason bought me a beautiful ring from Baby Anything with a blue sapphire in it. Borrowed – my veil. Old – both our grandmother’s eternity rings. Blue – my ring that Jason bought me.
What advice would you give to other couples leading up to their big day?
It’s a very big and very expensive day so just remember the main things that most guests take from a wedding – good food, good music and what the bride’s dress looks like ;).
What does marriage mean to you?
Everything. We have both grown up in loving and supportive families and we know that’s something we want for ourselves. It’s the start of our lives and we can’t wait to see what the future holds.
What was your favourite moment on your wedding day?
Seeing Jason at the end of the aisle holding back the tears (he did a hopeless job at that). Our ceremony was by far my favourite part. We made sure it was personal and had some humour. We are very easy going people and love to have a laugh.
Tell us any funny stories that surrounded your wedding?
Definitely the part where we played Chinese whispers during our photoshoot with the bridal party. I think it started off with “South African’s have great boobs” and then turned into “Jade (one of the bridesmaids) has nice boobs (one of the groomsmen had to say this in her ear), the look on his face when I told him is brilliant. There is a picture that captured the moment and it was priceless.
Also another funny moment was when I had just been walked down the aisle by my Dad and I got to the end and Jason hugged him and then I thought he might give me a kiss but instead he put his hand out to shake it… the boys found it hilarious!
How did you find your venue and was the process difficult for you?
I actually found it when I went to the Moby Dicks wedding fair with my best friend Nat. Nat got married a year before me and she wanted to check out the fair so I went along. I fell in love with Moby’s right then and there and knew that was where I wanted to have my wedding.
